FAQ

I installed the extension but nothing is reading aloud. What do I do?
Open the extension options (right-click the icon → Options). Check that you've pasted a valid pk_… key and clicked "Test voice" — if that plays audio, the pipeline works and the chat site's page just needs a refresh. If the test fails, check that the key is valid at voxrouter.ai. If the site still doesn't read aloud after all that, switch observer mode to DOM (advanced section) and refresh — that catches more chat backends.
Where do I get a VoxRouter API key?
Sign up at voxrouter.ai, add a small top-up, and copy your pk_… key from the dashboard. Takes about a minute.
How much does this cost me?
VoxChat is free. The TTS providers behind it charge per character spoken. Cheapest option is OpenAI's gpt-4o-mini-tts at roughly $0.60 per hour of audio. ElevenLabs is pricier but sounds better. Your exact bill depends on how much the AI replies.
Does VoxChat work on Safari / Firefox / mobile?
Not yet. V1 is Chromium only — Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc. Safari requires a different build (wrapped in a native app via Xcode) and we prioritize after Chrome traction. iOS Safari is on the roadmap but later — iOS audio autoplay policies require a UX redesign.
Can I request a new voice or chat site?
Yes. Email team@voxrouter.ai with the site URL and what you need. Common requests get bundled into regular updates.
Is my chat content going anywhere?
No. Chat text goes only to the TTS provider you picked (OpenAI/ElevenLabs/etc.) via the VoxRouter gateway, for the sole purpose of generating audio. Nothing is stored on our servers. See the privacy policy for the full data-flow breakdown.
